Review of "Primal" by Mark Batterson

Just last night, I finished reading Mark Battersons book “Primal” and I believe Mark wants to bring us back to basics. The book is broken into parts basically breaking it down in to the area’s upon which we are to love God with our heart, soul, mind and strength. I found that God really used the sections of the heart and the mind to speak to me the most. The challenges that Mark speaks of in the heart really spoke to me and not only me but also to my wife Tammy as well as I often times would re-read portions to her at times.

Mark asks of us if our heart breaks for the things that break the heart of God and he mentions being at Catalyst when Craig Groeschel asks us the same question and I remember being there with my friend Bill at Catalyst and Craig’s question truly breaking through to so many of us. I recall Craig saying to us “Break me Lord” and really being impacted by that and I really believe that it is through being broken by God that we are then able to be used by God in a greater way.

Mark shares many stories that truly hit home such as how many children are out there in the United States for Adoption that tugs on my heart strings and that of my wife Tammy. Mark writes in a way that is simple yet profound in that he can share a truth with you that is not new but yet he can put it in such a way that it comes across as “Wow” I never thought of it that way.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book, I will not share them all because I think you really should go out and get your own copy so you can read them in their context.

“God loves me enough to break me where I need to be broken”

“If you aren’t willing to listen to everything He has to say, you won’t hear anything He has to say. If you tune out His Convicting voice, you won’t hear His comforting voice or guiding voice either”

“When the soul stops wondering the minds stops learning”

In the end this book has challenged me to look at many areas of my Walk with Christ and I am so grateful that I was offered the opportunity to review it particularly at the end of the year because there are many things it has caused within my soul to stir that coming in to 2010 I hope with the Lord’s help I can make progress on.

One of the greatest lessons my family and I were reminded of from this book is that of giving more than we receive.

Have a great Christmas and New Year!

Primal will help you live in light of what matters most and discover what it means to love God. It will help you become great at the Great Commandment.

Make it your first book to read in 2010!
